Summary

A new method using DXA scans and skinfolds accurately predicts intra-abdominal adipose tissue (IAAT) in overweight women. This simpler, safer approach aids lifestyle intervention assessment.

  • CT scans measured IAAT; anthropometric data and skinfolds were collected.
  • Main Results:

    • A predictive model for IAAT area was developed using DXA 10-cm ROI and abdominal skinfold.
    • The model explained 68% of the variance in IAAT area (r(2) = 0.68).
    • DXA ROI measurements for fat and lean mass showed excellent interobserver reliability.

    Conclusions:

    • A reliable DXA ROI, defined by the iliac crest, was identified.
    • A simple equation using DXA ROI and skinfold predicts IAAT in overweight/obese postmenopausal women.
    • This DXA-based method is a safer, more cost-effective alternative to CT for monitoring IAAT reduction.
