Summary

eHealth, or electronic health, is increasingly important, but its role in health promotion is just beginning to be explored. This review found limited research on using information technology for health promotion, identifying four key application areas.

Background:

eHealth (electronic health) is a growing focus in healthcare development.
Despite interest in eHealth, its application in health promotion remains under-researched.
This study addresses the gap in understanding technology's role in advancing public health.

Purpose of the Study:

To review recent applications of information technology in health promotion.
To identify research trends and thematic areas of IT use in health promotion.
To establish a foundation for the emerging field of 'ePromotion of Health'.

Main Methods:

Systematic review of research articles published in 15 peer-reviewed journals.
Search focused on articles published between 2003 and June 2005.
Analysis of 1352 articles, with 56 selected for content related to IT in health promotion.

Main Results:

Research on information technology in health promotion is nascent, with a small proportion of reviewed articles relevant.
Four primary application areas were identified: IT as an intervention medium, research focus, research instrument, and for professional development.
The findings highlight an instrumental focus on technology's role in health promotion.

Conclusions:

Information technology's role in health promotion is an emerging research area.
The identified application areas provide a framework for understanding current IT use in health promotion.
The terms 'ePromotion of Health' or 'Health ePromotion' accurately describe this emerging field.
