Interferon-gamma gene polymorphism in Iranian patients with multiple sclerosis

This study investigated the link between interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) gene polymorphism and multiple sclerosis (MS) risk. The findings indicate no significant association between the IFN-γ +874 polymorphism and susceptibility or disease severity in MS patients.

- Genomic DNA samples were collected from clinically definite MS patients and their unaffected first-degree relatives.

- MS patients exhibited a lower frequency of TT genotypes (21.2%) and a higher frequency of AA genotypes (21.2%) compared to controls (30.3% TT, 12.1% AA).
- Despite observed differences in genotype frequencies, statistical analysis revealed no significant differences in IFN-γ genotype distribution between MS patients and controls.
- No statistically significant association was found between the IFN-γ +874 polymorphism and MS susceptibility or disease severity.
Conclusions:
- The interferon-gamma +874 polymorphism is not associated with an increased risk of developing multiple sclerosis.
- This genetic variation does not appear to influence the severity of multiple sclerosis.
- Further research may be needed to explore other genetic factors contributing to MS pathogenesis.
