Porous high-density polyethylene (Medpor) offers a safe and reliable framework for ear reconstruction in patients with congenital or acquired defects. This method provides a viable alternative when autogenous costal cartilage is unsuitable.

  • A two-stage surgical approach was employed for 61 patients (38 male, 23 female; ages 5-61).
  • The procedure involved postauricular skin expansion followed by Medpor framework implantation.
  • Successful reconstruction was achieved in all 61 patients.

Findings:

  • Excellent or good outcomes were reported in 80.3% of cases over a mean follow-up of 2.8 years.
  • Fair results were observed in 11.5%, and poor results in 4.9%.
