Self-Report Tests of Personality01:22

Self-Report Tests of Personality

Self-report inventories are objective personality assessments that use multiple-choice items or numbered scales, typically ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). They are often called Likert scales after Rensis Likert. These inventories are widely used due to their ease of administration and cost-effectiveness. One of the most prominent examples is the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), initially developed in the 1940s to assess abnormal personality traits.

Personality Theory by Eysenck and Eysenck

Hans and Sybil Eysenck developed a widely recognized theory of personality, which emphasizes the role of temperament and genetically based differences in shaping individual traits. Their theory posits that biological factors primarily determine personality and can be understood through two main dimensions: extroversion/introversion and neuroticism/stability.
In the extroversion/introversion dimension, highly extroverted people are sociable, outgoing, and easily connect with others. In contrast,...

Factors Influencing Attraction VI: Personality Traits

Dark Triad and Person Perception01:29

Dark Triad and Person Perception

Person perception is influenced by both external behaviors and the observer’s internal characteristics, including personality traits. Individuals with dark personality traits, comprising psychopathy, Machiavellianism, and narcissism — collectively known as the dark triad – exhibit manipulative and exploitative tendencies in social contexts. These traits affect how they perceive others and how they are perceived. The Role of Dark Personality Traits in Person PerceptionBlack et al. (2014) explored...
Social Cognitive Perspective on Personality01:30

Social Cognitive Perspective on Personality

Social cognitive perspectives on personality emphasize the importance of conscious awareness, beliefs, expectations, and goals in shaping behavior. These perspectives incorporate behaviorist principles, such as learning through reinforcement and conditioning, but extend beyond them by highlighting human reasoning and planning. Unlike traditional behaviorist views, social cognitive theory focuses on how individuals reflect on their past experiences and plan for future outcomes by considering...
Social Exchange Theory02:06

Social Exchange Theory

We have discussed why we form relationships, what attracts us to others, and different types of love. But what determines whether we are satisfied with and stay in a relationship? One theory that provides an explanation is social exchange theory. According to social exchange theory, we act as naïve economists in keeping a tally of the ratio of costs and benefits of forming and maintaining a relationship with others (Rusbult & Van Lange, 2003).

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Consumer Behavior
  • E-commerce

Background:

  • Understanding the psychological underpinnings of online consumer behavior is crucial in the digital age.
  • E-commerce platforms like eBay are widely used by young adults, necessitating research into their usage patterns.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between psychological traits and eBay usage in American undergraduate students.
  • To determine if competitiveness, locus of control, or money attitudes influence online purchasing behavior.

Main Methods:

  • A survey was administered to 102 American undergraduate students.
  • Data collected included eBay usage patterns, competitiveness scores, locus of control assessments, and money attitude evaluations.

Main Results:

  • No statistically significant association was found between eBay use and competitiveness scores.
  • Similarly, locus of control scores and money attitude scores were not correlated with eBay usage among the surveyed students.

Conclusions:

  • Psychological factors such as competitiveness, locus of control, and money attitudes do not appear to be primary drivers for eBay usage in this student population.
  • Further research may explore other variables influencing e-commerce engagement among young consumers.
