Role of Affect in Interpersonal Attraction01:24

Role of Affect in Interpersonal Attraction

Affect plays a crucial role in shaping interpersonal evaluations and perceptions. Emotions influence how individuals judge and respond to others, often determining whether interactions are viewed positively or negatively. This effect can manifest directly through interactions with the person in question or indirectly via associations with unrelated emotional experiences.Direct Effects of Affect on AttractionAffect directly influences interpersonal attraction when a person’s behavior elicits...
The Influence of Affect on Cognition01:29

The Influence of Affect on Cognition

Positive affect significantly influences cognitive processes, including evaluation, memory, creativity, and social judgments. Compared to negative affect, positive emotional states promote more favorable interpretations of stimuli, cognitive flexibility, and heuristic processing. These effects highlight emotions' powerful role in shaping how individuals perceive, remember, and interact with the world.Influence on Evaluation and AttributionWhen individuals experience positive affect, they are...
Role of Emotions in Social Life01:01

Role of Emotions in Social Life

Emotions play a fundamental role in shaping human experience and interactions. The absence of emotions would render life incomplete and fail to capture the essence of human nature. In social psychology, feelings and moods have been extensively studied due to their profound impact on social life and interpersonal relationships. These affective states influence decision-making, behavior, and social perceptions, making them integral to understanding human interactions.Emotions and Social...

Factors Influencing Attraction I: Proximity

Proximity plays a fundamental role in shaping interpersonal attraction by increasing opportunities for interaction and fostering familiarity. Research consistently demonstrates that individuals are more likely to form social bonds with those who are physically closer to them, whether in residential settings, workplaces, or educational institutions. This effect is largely driven by the increased frequency of encounters, which facilitates the development of friendships and romantic...

Physiological Theories: James-Lange Theory of Emotion

The James-Lange theory of emotion, proposed by William James and Carl Lange in the late 19th century, asserts that emotions are the result of physiological reactions to external stimuli. Contrary to the traditional view, which suggests that emotions directly arise from the perception of stimuli, this theory proposes that emotions occur as a consequence of the body's responses to such stimuli. According to this framework, an emotional experience is a cognitive interpretation of physiological...

The Influence of Cognition on Affect

Cognition plays a pivotal role in shaping emotional experiences, as demonstrated by Schachter and Singer’s two-factor theory of emotion. According to this model, emotion arises from a combination of physiological arousal and cognitive interpretation. The body’s physiological response to stimuli is ambiguous and only gains emotional significance through cognitive labeling. For instance, an increased heart rate and adrenaline surge while standing near an attractive person may be interpreted as...

Area of Science:

  • Human-Computer Interaction
  • Affective Computing
  • Virtual Reality

Background:

  • Traditional media like movies can elicit emotions, but manipulating interactive media for specific emotional responses remains less understood.
  • Virtual Reality (VR) offers unique potential as an affective medium due to its capacity to induce a strong sense of presence.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the efficacy of VR as a medium for inducing specific emotional states.
  • To explore the relationship between the feeling of presence and emotional responses within VR environments.

Main Methods:

  • Participants interacted with virtual environments designed to evoke either anxiety or relaxation.
  • Emotional responses and the sense of presence were measured during the VR experiences.

Main Results:

  • Interaction with "anxious" and "relaxing" virtual environments successfully produced corresponding emotional states (anxiety and relaxation).
  • A circular relationship was observed between presence and emotions: higher presence in emotional environments, and emotional states influenced by presence levels.

Conclusions:

  • Virtual Reality is a potent affective medium capable of inducing targeted emotions.
  • The interplay between presence and emotional states in VR is bidirectional and significant for affective interaction design.
