Summary

The Dynamic Gait Index (DGI) was successfully adapted for Brazilian Portuguese speakers. This validated tool demonstrates excellent reliability for assessing balance and gait in elderly populations.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To culturally adapt the Dynamic Gait Index (DGI) into Brazilian Portuguese.
  • To establish the reliability of the culturally adapted DGI for use in Brazil.

  • Cultural adaptation followed the Guillemin et al. (1993) methodology.
  • A prospective study involved 46 patients for adaptation and 35 elderly individuals for reliability testing.
  • Intra and interobserver reliability were assessed using Spearman rank correlation and Wilcoxon test, with internal consistency analyzed by Cronbach's alpha.

Main Results:

  • Statistically significant, strong correlations (r=0.655 to 0.951) were found for intra and interobserver assessments (p<0.001).
  • The Brazilian Portuguese DGI exhibited high internal consistency, with Cronbach's alpha ranging from 0.820 to 0.894.

Conclusions:

  • The Dynamic Gait Index (DGI) has been successfully culturally adapted to Brazilian Portuguese.
