Summary

Phonological cueing training improved naming in two aphasia patients. This language therapy induced brain reorganization, showing potential for recovery even in chronic stages of aphasia.

  • Two patients with chronic phonological anomia received intensive picture-naming training.
  • Performance was assessed pre- and post-training using event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI).

Findings:

  • Improved naming correlated with altered brain activity patterns.
  • A patient with a smaller lesion showed left perilesional reactivation.
  • A patient with a larger lesion exhibited right frontal lobe activation.

Implications:

  • Phonological strategies can enhance naming abilities in chronic aphasia.
  • Language training can induce significant cerebral reorganization and neuroplasticity.
  • Rehabilitation approaches may be tailored based on lesion characteristics and resulting brain activation patterns.
