Summary

Panoramic imaging is unreliable for assessing mesiodistal root angulations. Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) provides accurate measurements, unlike panoramic projections, for dental diagnostics.

Area of Science:

  • Dentistry
  • Radiology
  • Orthodontics

Background:

  • Accurate assessment of root angulation is crucial in orthodontics and dental diagnostics.
  • Panoramic radiography is a common imaging technique, but its accuracy for detailed root angulation measurement is questioned.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the accuracy of panoramic radiography in determining mesiodistal root angulations.
  • To compare the reliability of panoramic projections versus cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) for measuring root angulations.

Main Methods:

  • Plaster dental models from five patients were used.
  • Radiographic stents with radiopaque markers were fabricated for each model.
  • Panoramic and CBCT scans were acquired with the stents in place.
  • Mesiodistal root angulations were measured and compared across imaging modalities and to gold standard plaster models.

Main Results:

  • Measurements showed high reliability among independent observers.
  • Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) provided highly accurate root angulation measurements, consistent with plaster models.
  • Panoramic projections yielded unreliable data for root angulation when compared to CBCT and plaster models.

Conclusions:

  • Panoramic imaging is not an accurate method for determining mesiodistal root angulations in clinical patients.
  • CBCT is a superior imaging modality for precise root angulation assessment.
