KAI-1 tumor suppressor gene expression was evaluated in odontogenic cysts. Radicular cysts and follicular cysts showed KAI-1 positivity, while parakeratinized keratocysts lacked expression, suggesting a role in cyst invasiveness.
Area of Science:
- Oncology
- Oral Pathology
- Molecular Biology
Background:
- The KAI-1 tumor suppressor gene is expressed in normal tissues.
- Down-regulation of KAI-1 correlates with invasive phenotypes and metastasis in epithelial tumors.
- Understanding KAI-1 expression in odontogenic cysts may elucidate their behavior.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate KAI-1 expression in radicular cysts (RC), follicular cysts (FC), orthokeratinized keratocysts (OOKC), and parakeratinized keratocysts (POKC).
- To correlate KAI-1 expression patterns with the clinicopathological characteristics of these cysts.
Main Methods:
- Immunohistochemical analysis of KAI-1 expression.
- Study included 85 odontogenic cysts: 28 RC, 22 FC, and 35 OKC (16 OOKC, 19 POKC).
Main Results:
- All radicular cysts (RC) and follicular cysts (FC) exhibited positive KAI-1 immunoreactivity throughout the cyst epithelium.
- Parakeratinized keratocysts (POKC) were negative for KAI-1.
- Orthokeratinized keratocysts (OOKC) showed limited KAI-1 positivity (4 out of 16 cases).
Conclusions:
- The lack of KAI-1 expression in POKC may explain their aggressive behavior and invasiveness compared to other odontogenic cysts.
- KAI-1 expression patterns could be a significant factor differentiating the clinical and pathological behavior of odontogenic keratocysts.
