Background:

Bone marrow transplantation (BMT) is a life-saving procedure for various hematologic and oncologic conditions.
Sexual health is a critical component of overall quality of life, yet often overlooked in survivorship care.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the prevalence and nature of sexual difficulties in patients before and after bone marrow transplantation.
To identify factors influencing sexual function in BMT survivors.
To explore the role of healthcare provider communication and mental health in post-BMT sexual well-being.

Main Methods:

Longitudinal study assessing sexual function at pre-transplantation, and 1- and 3-years post-transplantation.
Patient-reported outcomes including sexual interest, physical attractiveness, and specific sexual dysfunctions.
Assessment of depression levels and communication about sexuality with healthcare providers.

Main Results:

Significant sexual difficulties were reported pre- and post-BMT, with varying patterns for men and women.
Women reported more widespread sexual problems at 1-year post-BMT, while men experienced issues with erection and orgasm.
Reduced sexual interest and increased concerns about body image persisted for women at 3-years, though improved from year 1. Baseline depression correlated with poorer sexual function at 3-years.
Half of patients reported no discussions about sexuality with healthcare providers.

Conclusions:

Sexual problems are a significant and persistent issue for bone marrow transplantation survivors.
Interventions targeting depression and enhancing healthcare provider education on sexual health are crucial for improving outcomes.
Addressing sexual health is vital for enhancing the overall quality of life for BMT survivors.
