Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Dermatology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Osteosarcoma is an aggressive bone cancer with a high metastatic potential.
  • Cutaneous metastasis from osteosarcoma is an exceptionally rare clinical presentation.

Observation:

  • A case of femoral osteosarcoma with subsequent development of cutaneous metastases to the scalp and neck is presented.
  • These metastases appeared 3 years post-treatment of the primary tumor.
  • Fine needle aspiration cytology was crucial for diagnosing these secondary skin lesions.

Findings:

  • This report adds to the limited literature, with only 8 previously documented instances of cutaneous osteosarcoma metastasis.
  • The diagnosis of cutaneous metastasis was confirmed via fine needle aspiration.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • Early investigation of suspicious skin nodules in osteosarcoma patients using fine needle aspiration is recommended.
  • Multiagent chemotherapy should be considered in the treatment protocol for all osteosarcoma patients to potentially mitigate metastatic spread.
