Summary

Spontaneous alternation behavior (SAB) in Paramecium depends on maze track length, not species. These findings resolve conflicting data and suggest SAB may not always rely on short-term memory.

Spontaneous alternating behavior (SAB) is a key metric for short-term memory in various studies.
Conflicting data exist regarding SAB in closely related taxa, including Paramecium species.

Purpose of the Study:

To resolve contradictory findings on spontaneous alternation behavior in Paramecium multimicronucleatum and Paramecium caudatum.
To investigate the influence of experimental design, specifically track length, on SAB in Paramecium.

Both Paramecium species exhibited spontaneous alternation behavior in short tracks.
Alternation behavior was not observed in long tracks for either species.
No significant difference in alternation behavior was found between P. multimicronucleatum and P. caudatum.

Conclusions:

The study resolves apparent contradictions in previous Paramecium SAB research.
Results indicate that SAB may not be solely dependent on short-term memory in all taxa.
Experimental design, particularly track length, is crucial for interpreting SAB data across species.
