Area of Science:

  • Medical Imaging
  • Dental Technology
  • Computer-Aided Diagnosis

Background:

  • Accurate tooth reconstruction from CT slices requires precise contour definition.
  • Existing methods may lack efficiency or require significant user intervention.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop a semi-automatic method for accurate tooth contour segmentation in dental CT images.
  • To improve the efficiency and reliability of tooth model reconstruction.

Main Methods:

  • Interactive segmentation on a reference CT slice.
  • Utilizing similarity between adjacent slices to project bounding boxes.
  • Employing region growing algorithm informed by previous slice data for automatic segmentation.
  • Slice-by-slice processing starting from the reference slice.

Main Results:

  • The proposed method achieves rapid and reliable detection of tooth contours.
  • Minimal user intervention is required for the segmentation process.
  • Demonstrated practical value in reconstructing tooth models from CT data.

Conclusions:

  • The semi-automatic method offers an efficient and accurate approach for tooth segmentation in dental CT.
  • This technique has significant potential for improving dental modeling and diagnostics.
  • The method's reliance on inter-slice similarity ensures reliable contour tracing.
