Duodenal duplication cysts: case report and review of the current literature
Insights
Duodenal duplication cysts are rare congenital gastrointestinal anomalies. This case highlights successful preoperative diagnosis using ultrasonography and computed tomography in a pediatric patient.
Area of Science:
- Pediatric Surgery
- Gastrointestinal Radiology
- Congenital Anomalies
Background:
- Duodenal duplication cysts are rare congenital malformations.
- Preoperative diagnosis of these cysts is challenging.
- Early diagnosis is crucial for effective management.
Observation:
- A 3-year-old child presented with a suspected duodenal abnormality.
- Diagnostic imaging included ultrasonography and computed tomography.
- These modalities were key in identifying the cyst.
Findings:
- The study successfully diagnosed a duodenal duplication cyst preoperatively.
- Ultrasonography and computed tomography provided accurate visualization.
- This facilitated timely surgical planning.
Implications:
- Accurate preoperative diagnosis of duodenal duplication cysts is achievable.
- Advanced imaging techniques improve diagnostic rates.
- Early detection leads to better patient outcomes in pediatric surgery.
Abstract:
Duodenal duplication cysts constitute a rare congenital anomaly of the gastrointestinal system, and a preoperative diagnosis of the condition is even less common. The authors present a case of a duodenal duplication cyst in a 3-year-old child in whom they were able to make the correct diagnosis preoperatively by means of ultrasonography and computed tomography.
