    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the impact of sodium bicarbonate on left ventricular performance in a canine model.
    • To investigate the potential mechanisms behind observed cardiac effects.

    Main Methods:

    • Seven canine subjects underwent right heart bypass preparation.
    • Intraauricular administration of sodium bicarbonate (100 ml, 1100 Osm, 60 mEq) was performed.
    • Left ventricular performance was monitored via pressure and dp/dt measurements.

    • Sodium bicarbonate induced a mild and transient depression of left ventricular function.
