Summary

Mannose-binding lectin (MBL) gene variants are linked to vitiligo susceptibility. Specifically, MBL2 codon 54 polymorphisms (alleles AB and BB) were significantly more frequent in vitiligo patients, suggesting a role in disease development.

Background:

  • Mannose-binding lectin (MBL) is a calcium-dependent lectin.
  • MBL plays a role in innate immunity and is associated with infections and autoimmune diseases.
  • Vitiligo is an autoimmune condition affecting skin pigmentation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between MBL2 gene variants and vitiligo.
  • To analyze specific polymorphisms in the MBL2 gene, namely codon 54 (allele B) and codon 57 (allele C).

Main Methods:

  • Genotyping of MBL2 gene polymorphisms using the PCR-RFLP method.
  • Analysis of samples from 40 vitiligo patients and 50 healthy controls.
  • Comparison of allele and genotype frequencies between patient and control groups.

Main Results:

  • Codon 57 polymorphism was not detected in any participants.
  • Significantly higher frequencies of low-level MBL2 genotypes (codon 54: AB and BB) were observed in vitiligo patients (37.5%) compared to controls (6%) (p < 0.001).
  • The B allele frequency at codon 54 was significantly higher in patients (20%) versus controls (3%).

Conclusions:

  • MBL2 codon 54 polymorphism is associated with an increased susceptibility to vitiligo.
  • These findings suggest a potential role for MBL2 gene variants in the pathogenesis of vitiligo.
