Summary

This study presents a rare case of a low-grade astrocytoma causing calvarial erosion in an adolescent. This finding expands the known clinical presentations of low-grade astrocytomas.

Background:

  • Gliomas originate in the brain's white matter, often deep-seated.
  • Superficial gliomas can cause calvarial erosion, predominantly oligodendrogliomas.
  • Low-grade astrocytomas rarely cause calvarial erosion.

Observation:

  • A case of a low-grade astrocytoma presenting with calvarial erosion in an adolescent is detailed.
  • This represents the first reported instance in the CT era.

Findings:

  • The adolescent patient's low-grade astrocytoma exhibited unusual calvarial erosion.
  • This case highlights an atypical manifestation of this glioma subtype.

Implications:

  • Clinicians should consider low-grade astrocytoma in the differential diagnosis of calvarial erosion, even in adolescents.
