Drugs for Treatment of Ulcerative Colitis in IBD

Ulcerative colitis is a chronic inflammatory condition primarily affecting the colon and rectum. The primary drugs used in the treatment of ulcerative colitis are aminosalicylates. They exhibit anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive properties. They modulate inflammatory mediators and inhibit the activity of nuclear factor κB (NF-κB).     Summary

    Giant urticaria, a rare skin condition, was linked to ulcerative colitis in a young woman. Treating her ulcerative colitis led to the resolution of her skin symptoms, suggesting urticaria was a manifestation of the underlying bowel disease.

    An Immunohistopathologic Study to Profile the Folate Receptor Beta Macrophage and Vascular Immune Microenvironment in Giant Cell Arteritis

    Background:

    • Giant urticaria and ulcerative colitis are independently rare conditions.
    • The co-occurrence of these two diseases is exceptionally infrequent.
    • Understanding the relationship between dermatological and gastrointestinal disorders is crucial for comprehensive patient care.

    Observation:

    • A 23-year-old female presented with transient, itchy skin welts that coalesced into larger patches on her arms and legs.
    • She subsequently developed abdominal pain and a mild fever.
    • Diagnostic examinations confirmed ulcerative colitis and revealed perinuclear anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody positivity.

    Findings:

    • Histological confirmation of ulcerative colitis was established.
    • Treatment targeting ulcerative colitis resulted in the complete remission of both gastrointestinal and cutaneous symptoms.
    • The skin manifestations, identified as giant urticaria, resolved concurrently with the improvement of ulcerative colitis.

    Implications:

    • This case suggests that giant urticaria can be an epiphenomenon of ulcerative colitis.
    • The findings highlight the potential for systemic immune dysregulation in ulcerative colitis to manifest cutaneously.
    • Further research into the immunological links between inflammatory bowel disease and dermatological conditions is warranted.
