Regional perfusion imaging (RPI), a novel arterial spin-labeling MRI technique, visualizes brain tissue supplied by specific arteries. This method demonstrated functional collateral circulation in a cerebrovascular disease patient, offering insights beyond conventional angiography for guiding ischemic disease therapy.
Area of Science:
- Neuroimaging
- Cerebrovascular Medicine
- Medical Physics
Background:
- Conventional angiography provides anatomical detail but lacks functional information on collateral circulation.
- Assessing collateral flow is crucial for managing ischemic cerebrovascular diseases.
Observation:
- Regional perfusion imaging (RPI), an arterial spin-labeling MRI method, was applied.
- RPI selectively visualizes brain regions perfused by individual carotid and basilar arteries.
Findings:
- In a patient with cerebrovascular disease, RPI successfully depicted cerebral tissue supplied by pial collateral vessels.
- This demonstrated a direct link between anatomical vascular territories and functional perfusion, overcoming limitations of conventional angiography.
Implications:
- RPI offers a valuable tool for studying functional collateral circulation in the brain.
- This technique may guide therapeutic strategies for patients with ischemic cerebrovascular conditions.
