We developed zHARP, a novel tagged magnetic resonance imaging method, to track 3D myocardial motion. This technique simultaneously captures in-plane and through-plane heart muscle movement, improving cardiac function evaluation.

Area of Science:

  • Cardiovascular Imaging
  • Biomedical Engineering
  • Medical Physics

Background:

  • Accurate three-dimensional (3D) imaging and quantification of myocardial function are critical for diagnosing cardiac diseases.
  • Existing motion encoding techniques in cardiac MRI often have limitations in capturing comprehensive 3D displacement or affect acquisition speed.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To introduce and validate zHARP, a novel tagged magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) methodology for 3D myocardial motion tracking.
  • To demonstrate the capability of zHARP to encode and automatically track myocardial displacement in three dimensions from a single image plane.

Main Methods:

  • zHARP methodology encodes both in-plane and through-plane myocardial motion within a single MRI image plane.
  • Acquisition speed is maintained without compromise.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Postprocessing algorithms unravel the encoded motion to enable direct tracking of 3D displacement for every point in the image plane throughout the cardiac cycle.
  • Main Results:

    • Phantom validation demonstrated comparable performance to phase contrast imaging.
    • In vivo studies on a healthy human volunteer confirmed the feasibility of the technique.
    • Simultaneous extraction of in-plane and through-plane displacements from tagged images was successfully achieved.

    Conclusions:

    • zHARP offers a feasible and efficient method for 3D myocardial motion quantification using tagged MRI.
    • This technique has the potential to enhance the evaluation of cardiac disease by providing comprehensive motion data.
    • zHARP overcomes limitations of previous methods by capturing multi-directional motion in a single acquisition plane.
