Aggression01:47

Aggression

Humans engage in aggression when they seek to cause harm or pain to another person. Aggression takes two forms depending on one’s motives: hostile or instrumental. Hostile aggression is motivated by feelings of anger with intent to cause pain; a fight in a bar with a stranger is an example of hostile aggression. In contrast, instrumental aggression is motivated by achieving a goal and does not necessarily involve intent to cause pain (Berkowitz, 1993); a contract killer who murders for hire...
Psychological and Sociocultural Causes of Schizophrenia01:29

Psychological and Sociocultural Causes of Schizophrenia

Schizophrenia, a complex psychiatric disorder, has been historically misunderstood. Early psychological theories attributed its origins to childhood trauma and unresponsive parenting. However, contemporary research largely rejects these notions, favoring the vulnerability-stress hypothesis. This model proposes that individuals with a genetic predisposition to schizophrenia may develop the disorder following exposure to significant environmental stressors. Notably, studies on high-risk...

Personality Disorders: Narcissistic and Avoidant

Narcissistic and avoidant personality traits represent two contrasting patterns of behavior that significantly influence social interactions and self-perception. While individuals with narcissistic disorder seek admiration and validation, individuals with avoidant personality disorder withdraw due to fear of judgment.
Characteristics of Narcissistic Personality Disorder
Narcissistic individuals exhibit an inflated sense of self-importance and an excessive need for admiration. They are often...
Antisocial Personality Disorder01:24

Antisocial Personality Disorder

Antisocial personality disorder is a chronic mental health condition characterized by persistent patterns of disregard for the rights and well-being of others. Individuals with antisocial personality disorder exhibit behaviors that include deceitfulness, impulsivity, irresponsibility, aggression, and a profound lack of empathy. These traits often manifest early in life and persist into adulthood, leading to significant personal, social, and legal consequences.

Self-Presentation: Self-Monitoring and Self-Handicapping02:05

Self-Presentation: Self-Monitoring and Self-Handicapping

People can go to great lengths to protect their self-image and present themselves in ways that they want others to see them. Sociologist Erving Goffman presented the idea that a person is like an actor on a stage. Calling his theory dramaturgy, Goffman believed that we use “impression management” to present ourselves to others as we hope to be perceived. Each situation is a new scene, and individuals perform different roles depending on who is present (Goffman, 1959). Think about the way you...
Theory of Romantic Attachment in Adulthood03:34

Theory of Romantic Attachment in Adulthood

Attachment is a long-standing connection or bond with others. While Attachment Theory was conceived in developmental psychology to describe infant-caregiver bonding, it's been extended into adulthood to include romantic relationships.

Summary

Recovered alcoholics (RA) with 3 years of abstinence show reduced physical and verbal aggression but still exhibit hostility and covert aggression. Long-term abstinence may not fully resolve all aggression-related behaviors in recovered alcoholics.

Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry
  • Psychology
  • Neuroscience

Background:

  • Alcohol consumption is linked to aggressive behavior.
  • Investigating aggression in recovered alcoholics (RA) is crucial for understanding long-term effects of abstinence.
  • Socially adapted RA with sustained abstinence were selected to minimize confounding factors.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine aggression and hostility in socially well-adapted recovered alcoholics (RA) after long-term abstinence.
  • To determine if treatment and sustained abstinence reduce aggression and hostility in RA.
  • To compare aggression levels in RA with reliable nonalcoholics (NA).

Main Methods:

  • Recruited male RA (n=64) with ≥3 years of abstinence and no psychiatric/personality disorders.
  • Recruited a control group of reliable nonalcoholics (NA) (n=69).
  • Assessed aggression and hostility using the Buss-Durkee Hostility Inventory (BDHI) and analyzed data using univariate and multivariate designs.

Main Results:

  • Statistically significant differences in overall aggression and hostility between RA and NA groups were found (p=0.00004).
  • RA group showed significantly higher levels of indirect aggression, irritability, negativism, suspicion, resentment, and guilt.
  • No significant differences were observed in physical and verbal aggression between the RA and NA groups.

Conclusions:

  • Long-term abstinence (≥3 years) in socially adapted recovered alcoholics is associated with persistent hostility and covert aggression.
  • While overt aggression (physical, verbal) may decrease, subtle forms of aggression and hostility remain.
  • Further research is needed to address residual hostility and covert aggression in recovered alcoholics.
