Summary

We experimentally demonstrated anyonic braiding statistics of Laughlin quasiparticles in a fractional quantum Hall state interferometer. This confirms the exotic nature of these fractional charge quasiparticles.

Area of Science:

  • Condensed Matter Physics
  • Quantum Physics

Background:

  • The fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) describes exotic states of matter in two-dimensional electron systems subjected to strong magnetic fields.
  • Quasiparticles in FQHE states are predicted to exhibit fractional charge and anyonic braiding statistics, deviating from conventional bosonic or fermionic behavior.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To experimentally realize and probe the braiding statistics of quasiparticles in the 1/3 fractional quantum Hall state.
  • To verify theoretical predictions regarding the behavior of anyons in a quantum interferometer.

Main Methods:

  • Fabrication of a quasiparticle interferometer with chiral edge channels coupled by quantum-coherent tunneling.
  • Measurement of magnetic flux and charge periods within the interferometer.
  • Analysis of observed periods in relation to theoretical predictions for anyonic particles.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Experimental observation of magnetic flux and charge periods of h/e and e/3, respectively.
  • These observed periods correspond to the creation of one quasielectron in the interferometer island.
  • The results deviate from the expected 3h/e flux period for integer statistics particles with charge e/3.

Conclusions:

  • The observed periods provide direct experimental evidence for the anyonic braiding statistics of Laughlin quasiparticles.
  • This work validates the theoretical framework of anyons and their unique statistical properties in FQHE systems.
