Summary

This pilot study found acupressure did not significantly reduce smoking withdrawal symptoms when used with nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) and behavioral therapy. Further research is needed to test this smoking cessation adjunct.

Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Behavioral Science
  • Complementary Medicine

Background:

  • Tobacco smoking cessation is a public health priority, with established therapies including nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) and behavioral interventions.
  • Acupuncture and acupressure are alternative methods for smoking cessation, but evidence of their effectiveness remains inconclusive.
  • This study aimed to assess the feasibility of investigating acupressure as an add-on treatment for smokers.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the feasibility of a study evaluating acupressure as an adjunct to standard smoking cessation treatments.
  • To inform the design of future research on acupressure for smoking cessation.

Main Methods:

  • An open, randomized controlled pilot study was conducted within a UK stop-smoking program.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Participants received standard care (NRT and group behavioral therapy) and were randomized to receive two auricular acupressure beads, one bead, or no additional therapy.
  • Outcomes included smoking cessation rates (CO levels), NRT dosage, and withdrawal symptom ratings.
  • Main Results:

    • Few participants completed the study, with limited data on NRT use.
    • Acupressure bead stimulation decreased over time, with minor discomfort and no significant side effects.
    • No significant differences in smoking cessation or withdrawal symptom scores were observed between groups.

    Conclusions:

    • The methods used in this pilot study were insufficient to detect any potential effects of acupressure on smoking withdrawal.
    • Further preliminary studies are required to refine the methodology before the efficacy of acupressure as a smoking cessation adjunct can be rigorously tested.
