Summary

This study found that reduced accommodation stimulus-response (S-R) slopes in marmosets are a consequence of induced myopia, not a cause. Myopia development did not correlate with pre-existing S-R slopes.

Background:

  • Accommodation plays a role in visually guided eye growth.
  • Lag of accommodation can lead to hyperopic blur, potentially inducing axial elongation and myopia.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To measure accommodation in awake marmosets.
  • To compare marmoset accommodation before and after inducing myopia with spectacle lenses.

Main Methods:

  • Measured accommodation stimulus-response (S-R) slopes in marmosets under monocular and binocular viewing conditions.
  • Induced myopia using binocular spectacle lenses and re-measured S-R slopes.
  • Analyzed the correlation between S-R slopes and the degree of induced myopia.

Main Results:

  • Untreated marmosets showed an average S-R slope near one, with significant individual variability.
  • Myopia induction led to a significant reduction in S-R slopes, proportional to the induced myopia.
  • Pre-existing S-R slopes showed weak correlation with the magnitude of myopia induced.

Conclusions:

  • The reduction in S-R slope observed in myopic marmosets is a result of myopia, not a predictor of its development.
  • Findings support the hypothesis that myopia induces changes in accommodation rather than low S-R slopes causing myopia.
