  • Pre- and post-intervention surveys were administered to students (12-13 years) and key adult caregivers to gather data on illness incidence, treatment practices, and beliefs about antibiotics.
  • The intervention included peer education, parent meetings, informational materials (booklets, videos, newsletters, posters), and a poster contest focused on appropriate medicine use.
  • Main Results:

    • The intervention group showed a significant increase in students (33.7%) and adults (38.0%) who reported not using antibiotics for colds and flu, after adjusting for control group changes.
    • Knowledge gaps regarding antibiotic use decreased, with intervention students showing a 15.1% reduction and adults a 5.0% reduction in not knowing if they had used an antibiotic.
    • Positive shifts in beliefs about the causes of colds/flu and the efficacy of antibiotics for these conditions were observed across all intervention groups.

    Conclusions:

    • Student peer-teaching programs can be an effective strategy for reducing unnecessary antibiotic consumption for viral respiratory infections.
    • Educational interventions can positively influence both student and adult health beliefs and behaviors related to antibiotic stewardship.
    • The findings support the integration of school-based health education programs to combat antibiotic resistance at a community level.
