Summary
Vaginal adenosis, a rare condition without diethylstilbestrol (DES) exposure, can cause discomfort. This case report details successful treatment of non-DES-related vaginal adenosis using unipolar cauterization.
Area of Science:
- Gynecology
- Pathology
Background:
- Vaginal adenosis is uncommon, particularly without diethylstilbestrol (DES) exposure, and its origins are not well understood.
- This condition can manifest with symptoms like vaginal discharge and painful intercourse (dyspareunia).
Observation:
- A 24-year-old female patient presented with persistent vaginal discharge and dyspareunia.
- Physical examination revealed diffuse, red, patchy lesions on the vaginal walls and cervix.
Findings:
- Histopathologic analysis confirmed vaginal adenosis accompanied by chronic inflammation.
- Standard antibiotic treatments (metronidazole, tetracycline) were ineffective.
Implications:
- Unipolar cauterization proved to be an effective treatment for non-DES-related vaginal adenosis.
- This case highlights an alternative therapeutic option for managing this rare gynecological condition.
