Many men with erectile dysfunction (ED) scoring below 26 on the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) report satisfaction with their treatment. This suggests the IIEF erectile function domain (EFD) score of 26 may not accurately reflect all patient satisfaction levels.

Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Sexual Health
  • Clinical Research

Background:

  • The International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) is a standard tool for assessing sexual function in research.
  • A score of 26 or higher on the IIEF erectile function domain (EFD) is often used as a treatment endpoint.
  • Clinical experience suggests some men with EFD scores below 26 are content with their sexual function.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the proportion of men with EFD scores below 26 who are satisfied with their erectogenic medication response.
  • To evaluate the correlation between IIEF scores and patient-reported satisfaction with sexual function and medication.

Main Methods:

  • 100 patients using sildenafil citrate were surveyed using the IIEF and global assessment questions.
  • Patients were grouped by EFD scores: >=26, 22-25, 18-21, and 11-17.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Responses regarding ability to have intercourse and satisfaction with medication were analyzed.
  • Main Results:

    • In the EFD score group of 22-25, 67% reported being somewhat or definitely able to have sexual intercourse, and 66% were satisfied with their medication.
    • For the 22-25 EFD score group, 84% and 78% found the medication improved erectile rigidity and ability to have intercourse, respectively.
    • No patient with an EFD score below 22 reported definite satisfaction with intercourse or medication.

    Conclusions:

    • A substantial number of patients with EFD scores between 21-25 achieve satisfactory sexual relations.
    • These patients also report satisfaction with their erectogenic medication, challenging the strict EFD score threshold of 26.
