Background:

  • Over 250,000 tractors in Spain predate mandatory rollover protective structures (ROPS).
  • Similar safety gaps exist across the EU, US, and developing nations.
  • Directive 2003/37/EEC allows homologation using OECD Code 4 for static ROPS testing.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To design and validate a retrofittable ROPS for older tractors.
  • To develop a computational tool (ESTREMA) for ROPS design.
  • To ensure operator safety by preventing intrusion into the driver's clearance zone during rollovers.

Main Methods:

  • A ROPS was designed for the Massey Ferguson 178 tractor using the ESTREMA program.
  • The designed ROPS underwent homologation testing (OECD Code 4) at an authorized station.
  • A real-world overturn test was conducted after ROPS redesign and remounting.

Main Results:

  • The ROPS passed the static homologation test (OECD Code 4).
  • Maximum distortion was 21.3 cm with 5437 N absorbed energy and 34 kN peak side load.
  • The redesigned ROPS prevented structural intrusion into the driver's clearance zone during a real overturn.

  • The ESTREMA program effectively facilitated ROPS design.
  • The developed ROPS design meets homologation standards and provides adequate operator protection.
