Background:

  • Cardiac vagal control, measured by respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA), is a potential marker for impaired self-regulation in mental health conditions like depression.
  • Previous research on depressed individuals has yielded inconsistent findings regarding resting RSA levels.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the hypothesis that depression is associated with abnormal fluctuations in RSA, not just resting levels.
  • To examine RSA during rest, reactivity tasks, and recovery periods in individuals with depression compared to healthy controls.

Main Methods:

  • Measured RSA in participants with depression and healthy controls during rest and two reactivity tasks with recovery phases.
  • Controlled for physical health and respiration to isolate group differences in RSA.

Main Results:

  • Depressed participants showed lower resting RSA levels and significantly less RSA fluctuation compared to controls.
