B1a lymphocyte levels are significantly reduced in ulcerative colitis (UC) patients, both before and after restorative proctocolectomy (RPC). This deficiency in natural immunity cells may contribute to the impaired immune response observed in UC.

- B1a cell concentration was significantly lower in non-operated UC patients (20.7/microl) compared to healthy controls (71.1/microl).
- UC patients who underwent RPC also showed reduced B1a cell levels (24.9/microl) compared to RPC patients with FAP (48.2/microl).
- B1a cell levels inversely correlated with ESR (R=-0.41) and CRP (R=-0.47) in UC patients.
Conclusions:
- B1a cell concentration remains reduced in UC patients even after RPC.
- The diminished B1a cell levels in UC patients may underlie an impaired immunologic response to gut antigens.
- This suggests a potential role for B1a lymphocytes in the pathogenesis or immune dysregulation of UC.
