Summary

Cigarette smoking is linked to non-lactational breast abscesses, increasing recurrence and mammillary fistula risk. Smokers are also more prone to anaerobic breast infections.

Area of Science:

  • Medical Research
  • Surgical Oncology
  • Infectious Diseases

Background:

  • Breast abscesses affect women in lactational and non-lactational periods.
  • Non-lactational breast abscesses present unique challenges, including recurrence and complications like mammillary fistulae.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between cigarette smoking and the development, recurrence, and complications of breast abscesses.
  • To explore the role of smoking in anaerobic breast infections and mammillary fistula formation.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 122 women with breast abscesses over 11 years.
  • Analysis of patient data including abscess type (lactational vs. non-lactational), recurrence rates, fistula development, and smoking status.
  • Histological examination of biopsies for duct ectasia.

Main Results:

  • Women with non-lactational breast abscesses were significantly more likely to be cigarette smokers.
  • Heavy smoking was associated with a higher risk of recurrent non-lactational abscesses and the development of mammillary fistulae.
  • Breast abscesses containing anaerobic bacteria were more prevalent in current smokers.

Conclusions:

  • Cigarette smoking is a significant factor in the natural history of non-lactational breast abscesses.
  • Smoking may predispose women to anaerobic breast infections and the subsequent development of mammillary fistulae.
  • Findings highlight the importance of smoking cessation in managing and preventing breast abscess complications.
