Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Epidemiology
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) exhibit lower rates of cardiovascular and respiratory diseases.
  • A healthy lifestyle is often associated with reduced incidence of various chronic illnesses.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the prevalence of multiple sclerosis (MS) within the LDS population.
  • To determine if adherence to LDS lifestyle correlates with lower MS rates.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized diagnostic and treatment coding records from Deseret Mutual Benefit Administrators (DMBA) spanning 1997-2002.
  • Cross-referenced DMBA data with records of disease-modifying treatments for MS, including beta-interferon and Copaxone.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • An estimated prevalence of multiple sclerosis (MS) was determined to be between 45-64 cases per 100,000 individuals.
  • This prevalence rate was analyzed in comparison to other regions.

Conclusions:

  • The study suggests a lower-than-expected prevalence of MS among strict LDS members.
  • This reduced incidence may be attributed to the healthy lifestyle choices adopted by adherents of the LDS faith.
