Ulcerative colitis is a chronic inflammatory condition primarily affecting the colon and rectum. The primary drugs used in the treatment of ulcerative colitis are aminosalicylates. Summary

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in three patients with psoriasis vulgaris improved with ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) treatment. UDCA may resolve psoriasis skin lesions by suppressing inflammatory mediators like phospholipase A(2).

Background:

  • Psoriasis vulgaris is a chronic inflammatory skin condition.
  • Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is increasingly prevalent.
  • Both conditions share potential inflammatory pathways involving phospholipase A(2) (PLA(2)).

Observation:

  • Three Japanese patients presented with psoriasis vulgaris co-occurring with NAFLD.
  • These patients experienced significant resolution of skin lesions after NAFLD treatment with ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA).

Findings:

  • Arachidonic acid metabolism via PLA(2) produces inflammatory eicosanoids implicated in psoriasis.
  • PLA(2) activity is elevated in psoriasis patients' serum and skin.
  • UDCA demonstrated inhibitory effects on group IIA PLA(2) (PLA(2)IIA) activity in cellular and clinical samples.

Implications:

  • UDCA treatment for NAFLD may offer a therapeutic benefit for psoriasis vulgaris.
  • Targeting PLA(2)IIA activity could be a novel strategy for managing psoriasis.
  • This suggests a potential link between liver health and dermatological inflammatory conditions.
