  • Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is an allergic inflammatory disease of the esophagus.
  • Increasing incidence worldwide necessitates better understanding and recognition.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review the presentation, pathogenesis, diagnosis, epidemiology, and treatment of eosinophilic esophagitis.
  • To enhance the clinical recognition of this condition.

Main Methods:

  • Literature search of MEDLINE using keywords: esophagitis, allergy, eosinophil, corticosteroids, leukotrienes, chemokines, and cytokines.
  • Inclusion of relevant and current review articles published in English from January 1990 to April 2006.

Main Results:

  • Diagnosis of EoE requires identifying 20-24 eosinophils per high-power field in esophageal biopsy specimens.
  • Current therapy includes corticosteroids and dietary elimination.
  • Pathogenesis remains incompletely understood.

Conclusions:

  • Patients with atopy presenting with dysphagia, reflux, vomiting, abdominal pain, or failure to thrive should be evaluated for EoE.
  • Endoscopy with esophageal biopsy is crucial for diagnosis.
  • Early recognition and diagnosis are vital for effective management.
