Adenoviruses were detected in 12 men with non-gonococcal urethritis (NGU). Subgenera B, D, and E adenoviruses were predominant, with types 4, 9, 35, 37, and 49 identified in this Australian cohort.
Area of Science:
- Virology
- Urology
- Infectious Diseases
Background:
- Non-gonococcal urethritis (NGU) etiology is often undetermined.
- Adenovirus's role in NGU is under-investigated.
Purpose of the Study:
- To detect and identify adenovirus types in men with NGU.
- To understand the prevalence of specific adenovirus subgenera in NGU cases.
Main Methods:
- Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for adenovirus detection.
- Sequence analysis for adenovirus typing.
- Evaluation of 636 men with NGU in Melbourne, Australia.
Main Results:
- Adenovirus detected in 12 (1.9%) of NGU cases.
- Identified adenovirus types: 4 (E), 35 (B), 9 (D), 37 (D), 49 (D).
- No mixed adenovirus strains were found.
Conclusions:
- Subgenera B, D, and E adenoviruses were most common in men with NGU.
- Specific adenovirus types contribute to NGU etiology.
- Further research into adenovirus-specific NGU treatments may be warranted.
