Summary

Rupture of Rathke's cleft cyst can cause inflammatory hypophysitis, leading to rapid clinical deterioration and pituitary gland dysfunction. Neuroimaging revealed cyst shrinkage correlating with worsening symptoms.

Area of Science:

  • Neuroendocrinology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Rathke's cleft cysts are benign intrasellar or suprasellar cysts.
  • Inflammatory hypophysitis can present with pituitary dysfunction.

Observation:

  • A 62-year-old woman experienced malaise and visual field narrowing, progressing to diabetes insipidus and panhypopituitarism.
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) initially showed a pituitary mass, which later shrunk, correlating with clinical deterioration.
  • Histological examination revealed features consistent with inflammatory hypophysitis and cyst remnants.

Findings:

  • The clinical deterioration and MRI findings of cyst shrinkage strongly suggest that a ruptured Rathke's cleft cyst induced inflammatory hypophysitis.
  • Histopathology confirmed inflammatory changes within the pituitary gland.

Implications:

  • This case highlights the potential for Rathke's cleft cyst rupture to mimic other pituitary pathologies.
  • Understanding this association is crucial for accurate diagnosis and management of pituitary disorders.
