Background:

  • Current guidelines (ICRP 60) assume a high threshold for radiation-induced cataracts.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the dose-response relationship for radiation-induced cataracts in Chernobyl liquidators.
  • To evaluate the current threshold for cataract development and inform radiation protection guidelines.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective cohort study of 8,607 Chernobyl clean-up workers (liquidators).
  • Ocular assessments for cataracts at 12 and 14 years post-exposure.
  • Analysis of cataract types (nuclear, posterior subcapsular, cortical) and their correlation with radiation dose.

Main Results:

  • Posterior subcapsular or cortical cataracts, indicative of radiation exposure, were found in 25% of subjects.
  • A significant dose-response was observed for Stage 1 cataracts, particularly posterior subcapsular cataracts.
