Physicians
The physician's primary responsibility is to diagnose illness and direct the medical or surgical treatment of the condition. Ophthalmic Drug Delivery Systems01:23

Ophthalmic Drug Delivery Systems

Ophthalmic drug delivery faces major limitations due to poor absorption across the corneal membrane. This process is primarily driven by diffusion and is influenced by two main factors: the physicochemical properties of the drug and tear drainage. Most ophthalmic drugs, such as pilocarpine, epinephrine, atropine, and local anesthetics, are weak bases. They are typically formulated at an acidic pH to enhance chemical stability. However, this leads to high ionization, reducing their ability to...

Healthcare Agencies I

Healthcare agencies provide healthcare services to people. In the United States, voluntary agencies are often non-profit centers sponsored by donations, grants, or fundraisers. One such organization is Meals on Wheels, which provides meals to the elderly and homebound. The American Heart Association and the American Lung Association are other non-profit community organizations. Doctors and nurses are frequently active members of these organizations, which offer health checks and educational...

Area of Science:

  • Medical Education
  • Ophthalmology Residency Admissions

Background:

  • The Université de Montréal (UdeM) ophthalmology program revised its admissions interview structure.
  • The new structure incorporated the seven CanMEDS roles (communicator, collaborator, manager, health advocate, professional, scholar, medical expert) defined by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC).

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effectiveness and reliability of a modified interview process for ophthalmology residency admissions.
  • To determine if the CanMEDS roles provided valuable information not available through record review alone.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective pilot study analyzed applicant records and interview scores.
  • Eight admissions committee members participated, forming four 2-person interview teams.
  • Three teams interviewed applicants based on CanMEDS roles using visual analogue scales; one team answered applicant questions.

Main Results:

  • Interrater reliability was acceptable for two of the three interview teams (intraclass correlations: 0.900, 0.739, 0.585).
  • Adequate Pearson correlation coefficients (0.562, 0.432, 0.417) were found between interviewer groups (p < 0.05).
  • Correlation between record marking and interview scoring was not statistically significant or was very low for individual interviewers.

Conclusions:

  • The CanMEDS-based interview process yielded unique insights into candidates beyond their academic records.
  • Reliability analysis confirmed the new interview method ensured sound and consistent judgment among admissions committee members.
