Area of Science:

  • Optics and Photonics
  • Laser Physics

Background:

  • Pulsed fiber lasers are crucial for various scientific and industrial applications.
  • Developing efficient and high-performance pulsed laser sources remains an active research area.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To propose and develop a new type of pulsed fiber laser: Ytterbium-Bismuth (Yb-Bi) lasers.
  • To investigate the performance characteristics of these novel Yb-Bi lasers.

Main Methods:

  • The Ytterbium fiber laser was Q-switched using a saturable absorber.
  • A Bismuth-doped fiber was incorporated into its own resonator to achieve pulsed lasing.
  • Continuous-wave diode-clad pumping at 975 nm was employed.

Main Results:

  • Pulsed laser action was achieved in the spectral range of 1050-1200 nm.
  • Maximum pulse energy reached up to 100 microJoules.
  • Average output power was up to 7.5 W with a repetition rate up to 100 kHz.

Conclusions:

  • The developed Yb-Bi laser demonstrates a promising new architecture for pulsed fiber lasers.
  • The laser exhibits high pulse energy, average power, and repetition rate, suitable for demanding applications.
