Summary

Bleeding stomal varices in cirrhosis patients are rare but severe. Cyanoacrylate embolization offers a safe and effective treatment when other methods fail, with no recurrence or side effects observed.

Background:

  • Patients with cirrhosis and enterostomy face rare but severe complications like bleeding stomal varices.
  • Pharmacological management of portal hypertension is often the first-line treatment.

Observation:

  • Two cases of bleeding stomal varices in patients with cirrhosis and colostomy are presented.
  • Initial pharmacological treatment with propranolol for portal hypertension was unsuccessful in controlling the bleeding.

Findings:

  • Transdermal injection of biological glue (cyanoacrylate) for embolization of stomal varices was performed.
  • The procedure effectively stopped the bleeding in both cases.
  • Follow-up periods of 8 and 16 months showed no recurrence of bleeding or adverse side effects.

Implications:

  • Cyanoacrylate embolization is a safe, easy, and efficient treatment option for bleeding stomal varices.
  • This minimally invasive technique provides a valuable alternative for managing this challenging complication.
  • Further studies may confirm the long-term efficacy and safety of this interventional approach.
