Proton-beam therapy (PBT) shows promising results for treating olfactory neuroblastoma (ONB), offering excellent local control and survival rates with minimal serious side effects. This advanced radiation technique is a safe and effective option for this rare cancer.
Area of Science:
- Radiation Oncology
- Medical Physics
- Oncology
Background:
- Olfactory neuroblastoma (ONB) is a rare malignancy with no established standard treatment.
- Radiation therapy for ONB is complex due to the tumor's proximity to critical organs.
- Proton-beam therapy (PBT) offers superior dose distribution compared to traditional X-ray therapy.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the feasibility and efficacy of PBT as a definitive treatment for olfactory neuroblastoma.
- To review preliminary clinical experience with PBT in ONB patients.
Main Methods:
- Retrospective review of 14 patients with ONB treated with PBT.
- PBT delivered a total dose of 65 Gy(E) in 2.5 Gy(E) daily fractions.
- Treatment was administered at the National Cancer Center Hospital East between November 1999 and February 2005.
Main Results:
- The 5-year overall survival rate was 93%.
- 5-year local progression-free survival was 84%, and 5-year relapse-free survival was 71%.
- One case of post-treatment liquorrhea occurred; most patients experienced mild (Grade 1-2) dermatitis. No severe adverse events (Grade 3+) were reported.
Conclusions:
- Preliminary PBT for ONB demonstrates excellent local control and survival outcomes.
- PBT is a safe and effective treatment modality for olfactory neuroblastoma.
- Further investigation of PBT for ONB is warranted.
