Purpose of the Study:

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective case series of 63 patients (71 eyes) undergoing pars plana vitrectomy (PPV).
  • Indications included vitreous hemorrhage (VH) and retinal detachment (RD).
  • Outcomes measured by best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and posterior segment status, with a minimum 6-month follow-up.

Main Results:

  • Mean BCVA improved from 1/60 to 6/24 post-vitrectomy (P<0.0001).
  • 76% of eyes showed improvement of ≥2 Snellen lines; 15.49% experienced surgical failure.
  • Visual acuity improvement was greater in the VH group compared to the RD group (P=0.009).

Conclusions:

  • Vitrectomy offers significant visual improvement for Eales' disease.
  • Good surgical outcomes are possible despite incomplete posterior vitreous detachment (PVD) and tractional sequelae.
