Area of Science:

  • Phytochemistry
  • Natural Products Chemistry

Background:

  • Hedyotis diffusa Willd. is a traditional medicinal herb.
  • The chemical constituents of Hedyotis diffusa are not fully elucidated.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To isolate and characterize new iridoid glucosides from Hedyotis diffusa.
  • To expand the understanding of Hedyotis diffusa phytochemistry.

Main Methods:

  • Isolation of compounds from the aerial parts of Hedyotis diffusa.
  • Structure elucidation using spectroscopic methods.

Main Results:

  • Three new iridoid glucosides were isolated: 6-O-p-coumaroyl, 6-O-p-methoxycinnamoyl, and 6-O-feruloyl ester of scandoside methyl ester.
  • The known glucoside asperuloside was also identified.

Conclusions:

  • The phytochemical investigation of Hedyotis diffusa yielded novel iridoid glucosides.
  • These findings contribute to the chemotaxonomic understanding of the Hedyotis genus.
