Summary

Researchers found that the cotton-top tamarin (Saguinus oedipus) has circulating autoantibodies against a specific protein in its colon. This protein is also found in human ulcerative colitis, suggesting a shared mechanism in colitis development.

Background:

  • Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease.
  • New World monkeys like Saguinus oedipus (cotton-top tamarin) develop colitis similar to human UC.
  • Only S. oedipus develops colon cancer, suggesting unique pathological mechanisms.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the presence of an autoantigen in S. oedipus colitis that cross-reacts with a human UC autoantigen.
  • To identify if this autoantigen is specific to the colon and associated with colitis.

Main Methods:

  • Immunoperoxidase assay using a monoclonal antibody (7E12H12) against a Mr 40,000 human colonic epithelial protein.
  • Immunotransblot analysis with eluted IgG from human UC colon (CCA-IgG).
  • Testing sera from S. oedipus with and without colitis for autoantibody activity.

  • Circulating autoantibodies against this protein are present in S. oedipus with colitis.
  • This suggests a potential shared autoimmune mechanism in colitis between humans and S. oedipus.
