Background:

Pre-registration junior doctors (interns) undergo diverse training.
The role of general practice terms in intern education requires examination.

Purpose of the Study:

To assess pre-registration junior doctors' views on the value of general practice terms.
To compare general practice and hospital-based training.

Main Methods:

Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 20 interns in South Australia.
Participants had completed general practice and core hospital terms.

Main Results:

Interns viewed general practice and hospital terms as complementary.
General practice provided unique skills in one-on-one consulting and patient management.
Practical and procedural skills were highly valued in general practice settings.

Conclusions:

Both general practice and hospital terms contribute to intern development.
General practice terms offer distinct learning experiences enhancing professional growth.
Inclusion of general practice terms in Australian intern training programs is recommended.
