Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the quality of highway runoff from major Irish roads.
  • To compare Irish runoff quality with international data, particularly from the UK.
  • To inform effective runoff management strategies for Irish motorways.

Main Methods:

  • Selected four monitoring sites on the M4 and M7 motorways near Dublin.
  • Utilized automatic samplers and continuous monitoring devices for runoff.
  • Analyzed samples for heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Pb, Zn), PAHs, VOCs (including MTBE), and conventional pollutants over 42 storm events.

Main Results:

  • Significant levels of solids and heavy metals were detected across all sites.
  • Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) were infrequently detected, with differing concentrations compared to UK data.
  • Heavy metal concentrations showed a strong correlation with total suspended solids.

Conclusions:

  • Irish motorway runoff quality is similar to UK levels despite lower traffic volumes.
  • Pollutant concentrations did not strongly correlate with rainfall intensity, ADD, or volume.
  • Site-specific investigations are crucial before implementing highway runoff management strategies in Ireland.
