Modeling in Therapy01:26

Modeling in Therapy

Modeling, a key technique in therapy, uses observational learning to help clients acquire and practice new skills by watching therapists demonstrate desired behaviors. This approach, rooted in Albert Bandura's concept of vicarious learning, plays a significant role in therapeutic interventions for various psychological conditions, including social anxiety, ADHD, and depression.

Participant modeling involves therapists demonstrating calm and effective behaviors in situations...
Positron Emission Tomography01:29

Positron Emission Tomography

Positron emission tomography (PET) is a medical imaging technique involving radiopharmaceuticals — substances that emit short-lived radiation. Although the first PET scanner was introduced in 1961, it took 15 more years before radiopharmaceuticals were combined with the technique and revolutionized its potential.
One of the main requirements of a PET scan is a positron-emitting radioisotope, which is produced in a cyclotron and then attached to a substance used by the part of the body being...
Operant Conditioning Intervention01:24

Operant Conditioning Intervention

Operant conditioning serves as a foundational principle in therapeutic interventions aimed at modifying maladaptive behaviors. Central to this approach is the notion that behaviors, both adaptive and maladaptive, are learned through reinforcement. By analyzing the environmental factors that reinforce problematic behaviors, clinicians can design interventions to weaken these reinforcements and replace maladaptive behaviors with healthier alternatives.
In operant conditioning, behaviors that are...
Behaviorism01:28

Behaviorism

The field of behaviorism was pioneered by figures such as Ivan Pavlov, John B. Watson, and B.F. Skinner fundamentally shifted the focus of psychology to the observable and controllable aspects of human and animal behavior. This shift marked a critical evolution in the discipline, emphasizing scientific rigor and experimental methodology.
The core premise of behaviorism is its focus on observable behavior rather than internal thoughts or feelings. This approach argues that true scientific...

Summary

PET-CT technologists primarily perform fusion scans, with limited CT-only procedures. Most CT-only tasks involve quality assurance, not clinical experience requirements.

Area of Science:

  • Radiologic Technology
  • Medical Imaging
  • Nuclear Medicine

Background:

  • Positron Emission Tomography (PET)/CT scanners integrate functional (PET) and anatomical (CT) imaging.
  • Technologists operating these advanced systems perform diverse imaging protocols.
  • Understanding the scope of practice for PET-CT technologists is crucial for training and certification.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To quantify the types and frequency of computed tomography (CT) scans performed by technologists on positron emission tomography (PET)/CT fusion scanners.
  • To assess the extent to which PET-CT technologists fulfill CT-only clinical experience requirements.

Main Methods:

  • A survey was distributed by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) to staff technologists.
  • The sample included technologists in nuclear medicine technology (NMT), CT, and fusion disciplines.
  • Data from 56 identified PET-CT technologists were analyzed regarding their scan performance and time allocation.

Main Results:

  • PET-CT technologists spend a significant portion of their time (mean 54%) on PET-CT or NMT procedures.
  • Only 18 out of 53 CT-only procedures required for ARRT certification could be fulfilled by respondents.
  • More than 35% of PET-CT technologists met current CT clinical experience requirements, with most CT-only tasks being quality assurance.

Conclusions:

  • PET-CT technologists predominantly operate fusion scanners for combined PET-CT imaging.
  • Performance of CT-only scans by PET-CT technologists on fusion scanners is infrequent.
  • PET-only scans are also rarely performed; CT-only tasks are mainly limited to quality assurance activities.
