Area of Science:

  • Neonatal Medicine
  • Pediatric Infectious Diseases
  • Hepatology

Background:

  • Neonatal hepatic abscess is a rare but serious condition.
  • Klebsiella species are common causes of neonatal infections.

Observation:

  • A 32-week preterm neonate (1300g) presented with septicemia, hepatomegaly, and an abdominal mass.
  • Initial radiological investigations for the abdominal mass were inconclusive.

Findings:

  • The solitary hepatic abscess was caused by Klebsiella.
  • The neonate exhibited symptoms of severe infection.

Implications:

  • Early diagnosis and prompt intervention are crucial for managing neonatal hepatic abscess.
  • Combined surgical and antibiotic therapy can lead to favorable outcomes.
