Surgically assisted rapid palatal expansion (SARPE) effectively expands the adult maxilla. Computed tomography (CT) reveals non-uniform expansion, with greater width increase anteriorly and intermediately compared to the posterior maxilla.

  • Limited defined landmarks exist for assessing maxillary expansion post-SARPE.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To define parameters for assessing skeletal changes following SARPE.
  • To utilize CT imaging to evaluate these defined parameters.
  • To analyze the pattern and uniformity of transverse maxillary expansion after SARPE.

Main Methods:

  • Fifteen adult patients underwent SARPE (modified Le Fort I osteotomy without pterygomaxillary separation and sagittal palatal osteotomy).
  • Axial and coronal CT views were used to measure linear and angular changes in anterior, intermediate, and posterior maxilla.
  • Maxillary cross-sectional area was calculated to assess overall expansion.

Main Results:

  • The study confirmed the reliability of CT for evaluating SARPE outcomes.
  • Significant overall transverse expansion of the maxilla was achieved.
  • Expansion patterns varied, with greater increases in maxillary width observed in the anterior and intermediate regions compared to the posterior.
